HAF- Outing to Channelsea River with Surge Coop (11-16 year olds)

Tuesday 16th & Wednesday 17th 1.30 - 9pm (pick up and drop off Highbury and Islington Station, parents/carers welcome to join) Come and join Surge Cooperative ( https://www.surge.coop/ ) on the Channelsea River in Stratford, to learn about the ways we are working with the river to create cooperative boat moorings, improve biodiversity and get to know the other species we’re sharing the space with. Build a floating habitat to help clean the water and provide nesting for birds, create amphibian dens to attract toads, snakes and other creatures to the ecology garden on the river bank, get your hands dirty with an experiential talk about mud and river ecologies with Prof. Kate Spencer, and connect with the soundscapes of the river and its surroundings through a listening session.   Day 1: Intro to the Channelsea River - discussion around the histories and ecologies of the river, followed by a listening session - engaging with the river’s soundscape and multi-layered histories and ecologies with listening activities Floating habitat build/amphibian den building   Day 2: Intro to Surge Cooperative, talking about our work and ways of working with environmental issues, including an experiential talk about the mud from Prof. Kate Spencer - getting up close with some mud samples, talking about tidal environments, pollution, and restoration possibilities. Islington's HAF programme provides free activities and food for children from Reception age to Year 11 (4 years – 16 years) who are eligible for benefits-related free school meals (FSM). Other eligible children include:

  • children assessed by the local authority as being in need, at risk or vulnerable, including children with social workers (on Children in Need (CIN) or Child Protection (CP) plans) or family support workers and young carers
  • looked-after children or previously looked after children
  • children with an EHC plan (education, health, and care plan)

Please come prepared for working outdoors and contact with water, there will be the opportunity to get stuck in and create a natural floating habitat.

The group will meet at Highbury an Islington Station 1.30pm at take overland train to the venue. returning back to Highbury and Islington station for 9pm.

 

The outing will involve being close to water and floating habitats, please come as prepared as possible for being outdoors, depending on the days weather conditions.
