Islington Carers Hub

We work with carers living or caring for someone living in Islington – A carer is a person who provides support for a partner, relative or friend who is frail, disabled, has a long-term illness, mental health issue or substance misuse problem and who cannot manage on their own. You do not have to be living with the person you care for. Carers provide this support to their loved ones without pay.  Islington Carers Hub as part of Age UK Islington offers:

  • Advice to carers about benefits they and the person they care for are entitled to.
  • Carry out benefit checks
  • Help people with forms for benefits like Carers Allowance, Disability Living Allowance and Attendance Allowance.
  • Can advise on appeals against benefit decisions and signpost carers to organisations that can represent them at tribunals if required.
  • Help carers on low income apply for grants from charities
  • Manage a small fund for carers to get money towards a break.
  • Information about changes to the benefit system through our advice surgeries, newsletters and our website.
  • Completes Carers Assessments and support planning for adult carers whose cared for is not in receipt of services from social services.
  • Housing and the accessibility of your home
  • Referrals for Community Care services for the person you care for.
  • The Emergency Carer's Card.
  • Assistance to access Jointly (www.jointlyapp.com), the smartphone app developed by Carers UK to help organise your caring role, the app has a one-off cost of £2.99.

Advice is provided at outreach sessions in venues across Islington as well as by phone or email. We can also carry out home visits if you cannot leave the person you care for or your own mobility is such that you could not get to a venue.

You can also meet other carers at our friendly and informal Support Groups. Anyone who registers with ICH will also receive a regular newsletter detailing services and support for carers in the borough.

From 1 April 2015, the new Care Act means that more carers may now be eligible for support from the council to help them in their caring role. A carer does not have to be caring for someone who is eligible for support from adult social care to have a carers assessment as they can now request an assessment in their own right. Support can include anything from information and advice to a personal budget. Please contact us for advice and further information.

This service can support clients with:

  • Debt advice and help with money
  • Help with benefits or grants
  • Advice about consumer law
