The Children's House School

We are a small independent school with a long history in Islington, catering for children between the ages of 2½ and 7. We are currently working on a project to expand our school to Year 6, beginning with our first Year 3 class from September 2022.

Our school is full of happy, confident, enquiring individuals who love to learn. We aim to inspire children to become independent thinkers, good communicators and to build positive relationships. We make learning practical, inspiring, relevant and challenging, allowing every child to reach their academic potential. The curriculum is broad and we provide enrichment in many forms, from a wide array of outings, to a strong emphasis on music, art and dance.

We have inspiring teachers and highly qualified teaching assistants, who value communication between children and adults. Because of our high adult/child ratios, we have the time to listen to children. We follow their interests and identify strengths and weaknesses in order to support and challenge them in their learning.

Because families are key to children’s happiness and ability to thrive, we have an open-door policy and encourage dialogue between home and school, with many opportunities for parents to get involved in the life of the school.  We take great pride in offering a warm, welcoming and loving environment and of our knowledge of every child as an individual.

Being at a local school, allows both children and adults to forge local friendships that long outlast their time at the school. Children are at the centre of everything we do.

How will you support my child?

We do all that is reasonable to ensure that every child has equal access to the curriculum and that School practices fully reflect the interests and needs of all members of our School community.  We make reasonable adjustments under the SEND Code of Practice 2014, to accommodate the needs of children, staff, parents and visitors.

Our Special Educational Needs Coordinator works in close partnership with parents to ensure that the individual needs of children are identified and help arrange assessment, as well as giving guidance on appropriate support strategies.

Learning is based on the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework for children from 2 ½ - 5 years of age. Our Reception children have a structured timetable of lessons in maths, English and topic. From Year 1 onwards, learning is based on the National Curriculum, although subjects are taught through topic themes, encouraging children to make cross-curricular links. Maths and English are taught separately.

There is a strong emphasis on developing children’s ability in the core skills of reading, writing and maths, alongside daily lessons in phonics and handwriting. The curriculum is enriched with lessons in singing, violin, drama, dance, languages and art, as well as regular educational outings throughout London and beyond. A wide variety of after school clubs such as fencing, chess, coding and puppetry, further enrich children's experience of school.

We place high value on our ethos of pastoral care through which children’s personal, social and emotional skills can be sensitively developed and supported by both their teachers and by one another.

Children are taught in small classes led by fully qualified class and specialist teachers, supported by a large team of teaching assistants.
