Goodinge Early Years Centre

Goodinge Early Years Centre achieved “good” in the recent OFSTED inspection (see note below). The effectiveness of leadership and management, quality of teaching, learning, assessment, personal development, behaviour, welfare and outcomes for children are all good.

The report states that: “There is a high proportion of well qualified and experienced staff who offer teaching that is consistently good with elements of outstanding practice.”

The centre has 66 full time places for children aged 6 months to 4 years and is open 49 weeks per year. Some of these places can be taken part-time.

At Goodinge we aim to provide a warm, family feel and give our families a sense of belonging. Developing positive relationships with our families and children is key. Evidence shows that children do best when there is a strong and positive partnership between home and the setting they are in. Home visits are the beginning of this partnership. Your child will be given a key person and they will get to know your child for the unique individual that they are.

We support children to develop their self-confidence and self-esteem and encourage independence. We focus on what the child’s interests are and develop these through sensitive interactions and planned activities. Each room has its own dedicated, well developed and well-resourced outside space for the children to enjoy.

Goodinge early Years Centre is recognised as an Islington Healthy Early Years setting and has received the Healthy Early Years London Bronze Award.

Islington Healthy Early Years works with settings to ensure a good level of support for the health and wellbeing of children under five and their families. Healthy Early Years London (HEYL) is an awards scheme funded by the Mayor of London which recognises Early Years settings’ achievements in child health, wellbeing and development. There is a charge for children under 3 who are not eligible for free early learning, and for those 3- and 4-year-olds who stay longer than the free education hours.

Referral Details

The Centre is popular and prioritises children on whether the child: is at risk or in need; has special educational needs; lives in Islington; lives close to the nursery; is the right age for the space available; has parents who are working or studying full-time.

You can apply for a place at a children’s centre by either collecting an application form from the centre or phoning and asking for one to be emailed to you. You can then return it in person or email back. If your child is offered a place, an admissions meeting will be arranged where you can bring in the relevant paperwork (proof of address etc) and the administrator will help you with the forms that need to be signed.

Centres are not offering tours at this time but you can see the rooms through a virtual tour and/or photo leaflets. If you would like any more information about protective measures in place at the centres to minimise risk of transmission of Covid-19 or curriculum practice and provision in general, please phone and ask to speak to the Head or Executive Head who will be happy to speak with you.

How will you support my child?

Our setting welcomes children with SEND and we are committed to working with parents and other professionals to provide good inclusive practice. Our Islington link Area SENCO provides us with support, advice and training re children with SEND.

Our SENCO has a level 3 in Early Years Practice and has attended SENCO training provided by the local authority. They liaise regularly with area SENCO and have experience is supporting children with a broad range of needs.

We have a continual professional development programme where staff have been supported to access training on Autism, PECS and speech and language. We have in-house training developed on positive behaviour strategies and special educational needs.

We have experience with supporting varying needs. The centre has supported children with complex medical needs where specialist equipment and intervention has been required, children low functioning autism and children with speech and language needs.

All children with SEN are supported bya short term plan. The SENCO works alongside the key worker and team around the child to identify the best possible care and support for the child. We run attention builder sessions, small story groups and language groups on site.

We have good links with our Area SENCO; Speech and Language; Health Visiting team; Educational Psychologist; Nurses/specialist – for babies and children with medical conditions requiring specialist support.
