London Westminster & Middlesex Family History Society

The London Westminster & Middlesex Family History Society (LWMFHS) supports family historians researching the areas of the City of London, the City of Westminster, the London boroughs of Barnet, Brent, Camden, Enfield, Haringey, Harrow and Islington, together with parts of Ealing and Hillingdon.

Despite our title we do not cover the whole of the old historic County of Middlesex, as the county ceased to exist in 1965, following the reorganisation of London local government.

Before 1965, modern-day Islington was divided into two Metropolitan Boroughs: Finsbury to the south and Islington to the north. Between 1900-1965, Finsbury comprised of Clerkenwell, St Luke, St Sepulchre with the Charterhouse and the Liberty of Glasshouse Yard. Before 1900, both areas were covered by the Ancient Parishes of Clerkenwell, Islington, St Luke Old Street and St Sepulchre. The former parish of Islington dates back to Anglo-Saxon times and is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Isendone'.
