Elfrida Society Islington
For over 100 years, The Elfrida Society has campaigned for inclusivity and against injustice for people with learning disabilities and/or learning difficulties (LD) in Islington. The charity was founded in 1919 by philanthropist and social pioneer Elfrida Rathbone who dedicated her career to educating and campaigning on behalf of those who needed more support in life. Originally known as Elfrida Rathbone Islington, the organisation changed its name to The Elfrida Society in 1996 and is a cherished part of the community and is at the forefront of support to those with LDs in Islington.
Today, The Elfrida Society provides a range of tailored services for our beneficiaries, ensuring they are able to manage as much of their lives as they want and feel able to through specialist advocacy, user led consultation groups and social inclusion activities. Our aim is to provide services and support that help people with LDDs build connections, have happy and independent lives, whilst having fun in the process.
We are at the forefront of the movement towards equal rights for those with LDDs and was one of the first organisations to provide bespoke community-based support for those with LDDs. Our projects are consistently successful in challenging negative attitudes and behaviours towards people with LDDs, and positively influencing local and national policy.
