Grandmentors Islington

Are you over 50 and can you give one hour a week and make to make a big difference to a young person’s life?

Grandmentors is an innovative intergenerational project based in Islington where mentors are matched with young people in care. The mentors are aged 50 plus who use their wisdom, energy, life skills and experience to support vulnerable young people in care who might be in challenging life circumstances and help them transit into independent living.

Some young people go through personal hardships and can become lost and not able to reach their full potential. This may be that they did not achieve academic results to continue into higher education, or were lacking interview skills and are unemployed, or maybe just that they have a skill they haven’t been able to develop through training and guidance. We believe all young people are capable of being in higher education, employment or training if they wish to be but we also know that some young people need a helping hand to achieve this.

The role of a Grandmentor consists of an older volunteer, once trained will regularly meeting a young person in care aged 16-24 for one to two hours per week. Slowly and surely, the Grandmentors build up a relationship of trust and mutual respect.

Often, the Grandmentor becomes a positive role model for the young person, helping them think about their goals, boosting their confidence and supporting them to develop their skill set. Grandmentors You will help them continue in their education, training or find employment so when they leave care they are able to transit into independent life.

No special skills or qualifications are needed for this voluntary role, just life experiences as well as a willingness to support someone who is need of a bit of help.

We support mentors by giving a full training, do the DBS check, have monthly mentor group meetings and cover expenses. The rewards are heartening, so to start making a difference today, see contact details below.
