The Elfrida Society - Consultation Services

Our Consultation Project is a supported employment project for adults with LD. The aim of the project is to employ, support and empower people with LD and family carers to have their say and review, monitor and shape services and products that support and enable people with LD to be safe, live independent lives, be happy and well. The project is divided into two services – the User Led Monitors and Carers View Monitors and the Power and Control Group.

Our User Led Monitors and Carers View Monitors review services commissioned by Islington Council including residential services and projects for those with LD. The User Led Monitors are a group of five people with LD, and our two Carers View monitors are both carers of people with LD. All those working on the project are experts on LD with first-hand experience which they use to quality check and evaluate service provision in Islington.

Monitors visit services and projects and talk to people who live in or use the project or service. They also speak with family carers and advocates to gather as much information as possible on the service they are reviewing. Reports produced by the project have resulted in direct action being taken to improve services for people with LD in Islington.

Our Power and Control Group has over 10 years’ experience reporting on and shaping services for people with LD in Islington. This group of nine supported employees and four volunteers speak up to decision makers about issues that impact people with LD in Islington. They cover issues such as jobs and employment, council services, housing, education, leisure facilities and access to health services. They also speak up about community safety, bullying and hate crime. P&C is the leading voice for people with LD in Islington’s Learning Disability Partnership Board and its sub-groups.

Other notes

The Elfrida Society works with people with learning difficulties in Islington and traces it’s work locally back to 1919. The Elfrida Society aims to make it possible for people with learning difficulties to manage as much of their lives as they want and feel able to do. We provide a range of services including Advocacy, Access to Health, Further Education Classes, Arts Groups, Outreach Support and support for Parents with learning difficulties. We challenge people to focus on strengths, skills and aspirations, and not just on the things that people cannot do, or need support with.
