Chance UK

Chance UK is an early intervention programme which provides 1:1 mentoring for children aged 5-11 years with behavioural challenges. Mentors and children meet weekly for one year and work in a solution-focused way on child-centered goals and projects. An optional parenting support programme is available to promote positive parenting.

Chance UK also runs a Girls Programme for girls aged 5 to 11 living or attending schools in Islington. The programme aims to prevent exploitation through identifying potentially vulnerable girls at primary school and building confidence and protective factors to prevent difficulties in the future.

How to refer or apply

Consent required. Eligibility for children being referred includes Goodmans’ Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire rating behavioural difficulties. Children must be referred before entering Year 6. More information can be found on our Referral Forms which can be downloaded on our website. Please call us if you have any further questions.

The Chance UK Core Programmes is most effective with children that have an age-equivalent level of verbal comprehension, communication and self-reflection skills to engage fully with our programme. Our programme's key elements include solution-focused talking tools (such as imagining a different future and exploring in detail the possibilities within this imagined siutation; identifying their own exceptions to their challenging behaviour, or what they did to prevent a situation escalating further and behavioural management strategies. We not specialise in working with ASD children or those with an 'organic' or medical cause behind their challenging behaviour, so we do  not accept referrals where this is diagnosed or strongly suspected.
