Domestic Abuse, Recovering Together (DART)

Domestic Abuse, Recovering Together (DART) is a group programme developed by NSPCC to help families recover from the adverse effects of domestic abuse. DART helps to rebuild & strengthen the parent-child relationship and helps children who have been affected by domestic abuse deal with day-to-day living more successfully.

Sessions are divided into two; the first part involves group discussions and joint activities between mothers and their child. During the second part, the mothers and children split into separate groups for 40 minutes before coming back together to share what they have worked on in their separate groups.

Length of programme: 10 weeks (2 hours per week) - usually from 12.30–2.:30 pm

Lunch and refreshments are provided.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND?

DART is designed for mothers and children who have previously experienced domestic abuse. They must no longer live with the DV perpetrator. Parents can attend DART with only one child at a time. They can be re-referred to complete the programme with another child at a later date. Priority will be given to parents and children who have not previously completed DART.

DART SUPPORTS WOMEN AND CHILDREN:

  • Understand what domestic abuse is
  • Know they are not to blame
  • Learn how to talk about domestic abuse
  • Identify protection strategies
  • Express feelings in acceptable ways
  • Build confidence and self-esteem

WHERE & WHEN ARE THE GROUPS DELIVERED?

Programmes are typically delivered in Children’s Centres or Schools. Children are released from lessons at 12 noon to attend. The DART team will contact the school to discuss the referral.
