Jargon Busting

Although we try hard not to, sometimes our Local Offer pages may include a word or phrase that is not well understood outside of a particular profession or area of work.  These words are sometimes called 'jargon'.

We are committed to making sure that our Local Offer is written in Plain English - a priority for our Co-Production Group (which includes an equal number of parents and professionals from Education, Health and Care services) is to:

  • Put information into Easy read and Plain English - Plain English means not using jargon or long words
  • Make sure staff are trained to communicate in Plain English
  • Put accessible information in the Local Offer
  • But in case we sometimes mess up, we have included a Care and Support Jargon Buster as part of our Local Offer....

The Care and Support Jargon Buster is a plain English guide to the most commonly used care and support words and phrases and what they mean. The definitions are plain English rather than legal, and were developed and tested by a steering group that included people who use services, carers, representatives from local authorities, information providers and key stakeholders from across the social care sector.

The Care and Support Jargon Buster won a Plain English Campaign Award in 2013.
