The Virtual School and Children with SEND

The Virtual School has prime responsibility to ‘champion’ the educational achievement of Islington’s Looked after Children (LAC). The majority of LAC have some form of special or additional educational need - as a group, LAC are nine times more likely to have an EHC Plan than the general pupil population.

To fulfil this statutory duty, the Virtual School tracks the attendance and attainment of all LAC on a termly basis and ensures that each child has an up to date personal education plan (PEP). The PEP records the additional support and opportunities, both in and out of school that should be put in place to enable each child and young person to make accelerated progress in their learning in order to narrow the achievement gap that exists between children and young people in care and the general school population.
