Parent Carers Assessment

Parent carers of disabled children under 18 years now have a stand alone right to assessments and services under the Children and Families Act 2014. This is called a parent carers needs assessment. This assessment can be combined with one for a disabled child and could be carried out by the same person at the same time.

In Islington, parent carer needs as well as the needs of any siblings are carefully considered as part of a comprehensive child and family assessment undertaken by the social worker. Assessments and support planning are holistic and ensure breaks and support for parents and support for siblings is explicitly considered alongside access to positive activities for a disabled child.

In exceptional cases if a more in depth assessment is required, a separate assessment can be considered.

Parent carer support is also available from the Islington SEND Community Support Service which can provide a range of information and support to parent carers and children and young people with SEN and disabilities in the borough and can be approached directly by families.
