Travel Training

Travel training helps children and young people gain the skills that help them travel safely and independently.

We have been working closely with Action for Kids who have produced a Travel Training Toolkit designed to support young people with autism or a disability to develop independent travel skills. This is freely available to parents through their website.

Many schools and services offer cycle training and pedestrian training as part of their work with groups of children and young people. You can contact your child’s school for more information.

Transport for London also offers a travel mentoring service for people who need support to develop their confidence in using public transport.

Young people have told us that they want to travel independently. Islington Council are therefore developing a small pilot of home/school travel training. We can currently consider young people for the pilot that:

  • Are Islington residents aged 14 – 25 with SEND.
  • Are currently receiving travel assistance from Islington Council to get to school or college.
  • Have the basic skills needed to access travel training programme.
  • Have the potential to become fully independent travellers to and from school within a timeframe of between several weeks and 6 months.
