Moreland Children's Centre

Moreland Children's Centre is a friendly and welcoming centre based in EC1 in South Islington. The centre is part of Moreland School and has its own entrance in Gard Street. 

The children's centre includes a nursery for 0 to 3 year olds, with a baby room and toddler room offering education and childcare all year round and part-time, term-time only free places for eligible two years olds. The Centre  provides a range of Bright Start Early Childhood services from pregnancy until your child is five to support you and your child every step of the way and to help give your child the best start in life. Services on offer include:

  • Early education and childcare including a childminding base with opportunities for parents to meet local childminders
  • Child and family health including midwifery, heath visiting, child health clinic
  • Speech and language support
  • Breastfeeding support group, infant feeding and healthy eating
  • Stay and play and other activities for you and your child to enjoy and learn together such as storytelling, singing and music
  • Family and parenting support
  • Information and advice about employment training, benefits

How will you support my child?

Our setting welcomes children with SEND and we are committed to working with parents and other professionals to provide good inclusive practice. Our Islington link Area SENCO provides us with support, advice and training re children with SEND.

Our SENCO is a fully qualified Teacher and holds the National Award for Special Educational Needs Co-Ordination.  

Our staff have a variety of training and expertise between them.  All Staff receive regular training tailored to their roles: ITIPS Training – Islington Trauma Informed Practice in Schools; Autism Education Trust Training Early Years; Box Clever Language Training Programme; Makaton Training Level 1; Short term planning training; Asthma Training; Epilepsy Training; Paediatric First Aid; Adrenaline Auto Injector Training.

We have experience of working with children from 0 – 5 years who have needs in the following areas:

Communication and interaction: e.g. speech, language and communication needs (SLCN) Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)

Cognition and learning: e.g. Specific learning difficulties (SpLD), moderate learning difficulties (MLD), severe learning difficulties (SLD), global developmental delay (GDD), dyslexia, dyscalculia, dyspraxia, profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD)

Social, emotional and mental health difficulties (SEMH): e.g. attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD), depression, anxiety, eating disorders, attachment disorder

Sensory and/or physical needs: e.g. vision impairment (VI), hearing impairment (HI), a multi-sensory impairment (MSI), Cerebral Palsy (CP), epilepsy {Note – the building is fully accessible to pupils with mobility difficulties.

Medical needs: Where pupils have medical needs and special educational needs, we will plan and deliver education provision in a co-ordinated way with their healthcare plan if they have one. We will also follow the statutory guidance on supporting pupils at school with medical conditions.

We work with the following professional partners to support our children and families:

Early Years Inclusion Team – advice and training to practitioners working with children under 5 with SEND; Social Communication Team – A multi-disciplinary team working to assess and support children with Autism Spectrum Condition; Bright Start – Family Support Service; Early Years Speech and Language Therapy Team; CAMHS – Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service; Richard Cloudesley Outreach Team – supporting children with severe learning difficulties, physical disabilities and sensory impairments such as hearing and sight; Educational Psychology Service; Islington Area SENCO team
